Once in our base station Terme del Tufaro in Contursi Terme arrived, we have made almost daily trips to the surroundings. Of course it's more relaxed, to arrive by plane or train, but we're still young and I had a huge desire to the area by car to explore. And so we can supply us in the morning at the reception always with tips on destinations in the area - our first trip took us to Paestum , but as one of the prettiest villages in the area should turn out Teggiano.

Teggiano is located about 37 km from Contursi Terme and can be easily reached by motorway. The town (population approximately 8,300) were so used to be called Diano and the "Vallo di Diano" (the upper part of the valley, known by the same park) his name. It was named after the Greek city of Tegea Teggiano, Paestum is not only a witness of the ancient Greeks in the Cilento. The old one was Tegianum capital of Lucania and was supported by the Emperor Nero colony. Traces of the original settlement may be as excavation at the foot of the hill visited, on which the current rises imposingly Teggiano over the valley. Even a Roman bridge has been preserved.

The Castello Sanseverino , various churches and monastic buildings are of historical interest (see photos), including a cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore in the 13th Century, the Chiesa di San Francesco and the church of Sant'Andrea . The medieval town still bears witness today to the economic and military dominance of the former family of Sanseverino in Diano Diano Valley. The "Museo delle Erbe" Teggiano is one of the most important herbs museums in Europe.

But even without the small town of historical interest Teggiano alone is a stunning location on a hillside overlooking the mountains, worth a detour.
